Convert a bank statement PDF to Excel
The download is a CSV. Excel and Google Sheets both open it as a sheet. Every row is checked against the opening and closing balance. Five pages are free.
Convert a statementOpen the CSV in Excel
- Upload the bank statement PDF and convert it.
- Download the CSV.
- In Excel, choose File, then Open, and pick the CSV. Double-clicking the file does the same thing when Excel is what opens CSV files on that computer.
- If a whole row lands in one cell, choose Data, then From Text/CSV, and set the separator to comma.
The columns are Date, Description, Debit, Credit, Amount, and Balance.
Open the CSV in Google Sheets
- In Google Sheets, choose File, then Import, then Upload.
- Select the CSV.
- Import it as a new sheet. The separator is a comma.
The balance check
Opening balance plus credits minus debits is compared with the closing balance printed on the statement. A running balance that breaks is marked on the first row that does not follow. You can see that on the page before you download.
Questions
Why a CSV instead of an Excel workbook?
A CSV is the same rows, and both Excel and Google Sheets open it. There is no separate .xlsx file.
Can I put the same statement in QuickBooks?
Yes. The conversion also builds a QBO file. PDF to QBO has the Web Connect steps for QuickBooks Online and Desktop.
What about a scanned statement?
Drag across a dollar amount in the PDF. If it highlights, the page has text this converter can read. A picture of a page does not.
